Why 10 minutes is 0.17
Decimal hours express minutes as a fraction of 60, because an hour has 60 minutes: 10 ÷ 60 = 0.1667, which payroll rounds to 0.17. Ten minutes is one sixth of an hour, 0.1667, and it is the value that catches people who assume a tenth of an hour is ten minutes. It is not: a tenth of an hour is six minutes, so ten minutes is 0.17 of an hour, not 0.10.
Hours and 10 minutes in decimal
| Time | Hours and minutes | Decimal hours |
|---|---|---|
| 1:10 | 1 h 10 min | 1.17 |
| 2:10 | 2 h 10 min | 2.17 |
| 3:10 | 3 h 10 min | 3.17 |
| 4:10 | 4 h 10 min | 4.17 |
| 5:10 | 5 h 10 min | 5.17 |
| 6:10 | 6 h 10 min | 6.17 |
| 7:10 | 7 h 10 min | 7.17 |
| 8:10 | 8 h 10 min | 8.17 |
| 9:10 | 9 h 10 min | 9.17 |
| 10:10 | 10 h 10 min | 10.17 |
| 11:10 | 11 h 10 min | 11.17 |
| 12:10 | 12 h 10 min | 12.17 |
The whole hours are unchanged; only the minutes are converted. So 8 hours 10 minutes is 8.17 hours, never 8.10. The hours to decimal calculator converts any hh:mm value and back.
10 minutes under payroll rounding
| Convention | 10 minutes becomes | Decimal |
|---|---|---|
| Exact (hundredths) | 10 min | 0.17 |
| Tenths of an hour (6-minute steps) | 12 min | 0.2 |
| Quarter hours (15-minute steps, 7-minute rule) | 15 min | 0.25 |
Rounding to tenths or quarters is permitted under 29 CFR 785.48(b) when it averages out over time. 10 minutes is 5 minutes from the nearest quarter hour, so a quarter-hour clock adds that much on every punch that lands here. The time clock calculator applies each convention to real punches.
What 10 minutes is worth
| Hourly rate | 10 minutes |
|---|---|
| $15.00 | $2.50 |
| $20.00 | $3.33 |
| $25.00 | $4.17 |
| $30.00 | $5.00 |
| $50.00 | $8.33 |
Multiply the decimal by the rate: 0.17 × $20.00 = $3.33. At time and a half the same 10 minutes of overtime pay 0.17 × $30.00 = $5.00. Over a 5-day week, 10 unpaid minutes a day are 0.83 hours, and over a year of 250 workdays 41.7 hours.
Other values: 5 minutes, 15 minutes, 20 minutes, 25 minutes, 30 minutes, 35 minutes, 40 minutes, 45 minutes, 50 minutes, 55 minutes. The full minute-by-minute chart is on the minutes to decimal page.
Frequently asked questions
What is 10 minutes in decimal?
0.17 hours. Divide the minutes by 60: 10 ÷ 60 = 0.1667, which payroll rounds to two places. As a fraction it is 1/6 of an hour. Any whole number of hours plus 10 minutes is that number plus 0.17: 3 hours 10 minutes is 3.17 hours.
Is 10 minutes 0.10 of an hour?
No. 0.10 of an hour would be 6 minutes, because decimal hours are hundredths of 60 minutes, not minutes. 10 minutes is 0.17 of an hour. Writing minutes after a decimal point is the most common timesheet error and understates the time by 4 minutes.
How much is 10 minutes of overtime?
0.17 hours at the overtime rate. At a regular rate of $20.00 and time and a half, the overtime rate is $30.00 and 10 minutes pay $5.00. Overtime is measured in exact minutes unless the employer uses a lawful rounding rule, so 10 minutes over 40 hours in a workweek is 0.17 overtime hours.
