Why 30 minutes is 0.50
Decimal hours express minutes as a fraction of 60, because an hour has 60 minutes: 30 ÷ 60 = 0.5. Half an hour is 0.5 exactly, the one value that needs no rounding at all. 8:30 on a time card is 8.5 hours, and the common mistake of writing it as 8.30 understates the day by 12 minutes.
Hours and 30 minutes in decimal
| Time | Hours and minutes | Decimal hours |
|---|---|---|
| 1:30 | 1 h 30 min | 1.50 |
| 2:30 | 2 h 30 min | 2.50 |
| 3:30 | 3 h 30 min | 3.50 |
| 4:30 | 4 h 30 min | 4.50 |
| 5:30 | 5 h 30 min | 5.50 |
| 6:30 | 6 h 30 min | 6.50 |
| 7:30 | 7 h 30 min | 7.50 |
| 8:30 | 8 h 30 min | 8.50 |
| 9:30 | 9 h 30 min | 9.50 |
| 10:30 | 10 h 30 min | 10.50 |
| 11:30 | 11 h 30 min | 11.50 |
| 12:30 | 12 h 30 min | 12.50 |
The whole hours are unchanged; only the minutes are converted. So 8 hours 30 minutes is 8.50 hours, never 8.30. The hours to decimal calculator converts any hh:mm value and back.
30 minutes under payroll rounding
| Convention | 30 minutes becomes | Decimal |
|---|---|---|
| Exact (hundredths) | 30 min | 0.50 |
| Tenths of an hour (6-minute steps) | 30 min | 0.5 |
| Quarter hours (15-minute steps, 7-minute rule) | 30 min | 0.50 |
Rounding to tenths or quarters is permitted under 29 CFR 785.48(b) when it averages out over time. 30 minutes sits exactly on a quarter hour, so quarter-hour rounding leaves it alone. The time clock calculator applies each convention to real punches.
What 30 minutes is worth
| Hourly rate | 30 minutes |
|---|---|
| $15.00 | $7.50 |
| $20.00 | $10.00 |
| $25.00 | $12.50 |
| $30.00 | $15.00 |
| $50.00 | $25.00 |
Multiply the decimal by the rate: 0.50 × $20.00 = $10.00. At time and a half the same 30 minutes of overtime pay 0.50 × $30.00 = $15.00. Over a 5-day week, 30 unpaid minutes a day are 2.50 hours, and over a year of 250 workdays 125.0 hours.
Other values: 5 minutes, 10 minutes, 15 minutes, 20 minutes, 25 minutes, 35 minutes, 40 minutes, 45 minutes, 50 minutes, 55 minutes. The full minute-by-minute chart is on the minutes to decimal page.
Frequently asked questions
What is 30 minutes in decimal?
0.50 hours. Divide the minutes by 60: 30 ÷ 60 = 0.5, which payroll rounds to two places. As a fraction it is 1/2 of an hour. Any whole number of hours plus 30 minutes is that number plus 0.50: 3 hours 30 minutes is 3.50 hours.
Is 30 minutes 0.30 of an hour?
No. 0.30 of an hour would be 18 minutes, because decimal hours are hundredths of 60 minutes, not minutes. 30 minutes is 0.50 of an hour. Writing minutes after a decimal point is the most common timesheet error and understates the time by 12 minutes.
How much is 30 minutes of overtime?
0.50 hours at the overtime rate. At a regular rate of $20.00 and time and a half, the overtime rate is $30.00 and 30 minutes pay $15.00. Overtime is measured in exact minutes unless the employer uses a lawful rounding rule, so 30 minutes over 40 hours in a workweek is 0.50 overtime hours.
