Work Hours in a Month Calculator

Pick a month, a year and a holiday calendar and the calculator counts the workdays, removes the holidays that land on them and gives you the scheduled hours for your weekly schedule. Enter vacation or sick days and it shows what is left to work; enter actual hours and it shows the balance. Below: every month of 2026 for the United States and the United Kingdom, and the answer by weekly hours.

The three answers, and which one you need

“How many hours in a month” has three honest answers, and arguments usually start because two people are using different ones.

Hours in a month, three ways (40-hour week, Monday to Friday)
QuestionAnswerHow it is calculatedUsed for
Clock hours in a month672 to 744; 730.5 on averagedays in the month × 24; 8,766 ÷ 12 for the averagerent, subscriptions, uptime, anything billed by the calendar
Work hours by the calendar152 to 176 in 2026workdays in the month × 8, after removing holidays that fall on a weekdayscheduling, timesheets, hours-based pay, comparing months
Work hours on average173.3340 × 52 ÷ 12, the 2,080-hour year spread over 12 monthssalary conversions, hourly rate from annual pay, HR averages
Federal pay divisor173.922,087 ÷ 12; 2,087 is the federal government’s hourly divisor under 5 U.S.C. 5504federal civilian pay, some government contracts

The calendar answer is the one the calculator gives, because it is the only one that is true for a specific month. The averages are useful for turning a salary into an hourly rate, and the hourly to salary calculator uses them for that. They are a poor way to plan a month: February 2026 has 19 workdays and 152 hours, March has 22 and 176, and nobody works 173.33 hours in either.

The 2,087 figure is worth knowing because it explains a lot of odd hourly rates. A year has 365.25 days on average, which is 52.179 weeks and 2,087 hours at 40 a week. The federal government has used that divisor since 1985, which is why a federal salary of $60,000 converts to $28.75 an hour and not $28.85. Most private employers use 2,080 and ignore leap years.

Work hours in 2026, month by month (United States)

The table assumes Monday to Friday, 8 hours a day, and the eleven federal holidays with their observed dates. 2026 has 11 federal holidays on weekdays; Independence Day falls on a Saturday and is observed on Friday, July 3. Private employers are not required to give any of these days off, so if your company works on Columbus Day or Veterans Day, add 8 hours back to that month.

2,000 hours over 250 days is 166.67 hours a month on average, a little under the 173.33 of the flat method because the flat method does not know about holidays. 2027 comes to 2,000 hours over 250 workdays; the calculator above switches years. Paid time off is not deducted here: 15 days of PTO take another 120 hours off the year.

Work hours in 2026, month by month (United Kingdom)

For England and Wales the usual full-time week is 37.5 hours, 7.5 a day, and there are eight bank holidays. 2026 has 8 of them on weekdays. Scotland and Northern Ireland have their own dates; the calculator lists all three.

UK employers usually quote monthly hours as weekly hours × 52 ÷ 12, so 37.5 hours is “162.5 a month”; the figure in a contract is that average, not the calendar count. Statutory holiday entitlement of 5.6 weeks (28 days for a five-day week) can include the bank holidays, which is why some employment contracts count 20 days of leave plus 8 bank holidays and others 28 days with bank holidays worked.

Part-time schedules follow the same arithmetic as long as the days are spread over the week. A 20-hour week worked as four hours a day, Monday to Friday, loses 4 hours on every weekday holiday; the same 20 hours worked on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday lose 6.67 hours when the holiday is a Monday and nothing when it is a Friday. Set the workdays per week in the calculator to match; it counts from Monday.

Two thresholds people look for in this table: the Affordable Care Act treats 130 hours a month, or 30 a week, as full time for the employer mandate, and the Bureau of Labor Statistics counts 35 hours a week as full time in its surveys. Neither number is a legal minimum for calling someone full time; the FLSA does not define full time at all.

Holidays, PTO and overtime: what counts as hours

Federal law does not require paid holidays, paid vacation or sick leave; the holidays in the tables are days most offices close, not days anyone is entitled to. Where an employer does pay for a holiday, the paid hours are not “hours worked” under the FLSA. 29 CFR 778.218 says time paid for holidays, vacation and illness is excluded when counting the 40 hours that trigger overtime, so a week with a paid Monday holiday and four ten-hour days is 48 paid hours and zero overtime hours unless the employer’s policy says otherwise. California counts the same way for its daily overtime.

That is also why monthly totals never decide overtime. The FLSA counts a fixed, recurring workweek of seven days; a month that reaches 184 hours contains no overtime if no single week exceeds 40, and a month of 160 hours can contain plenty if the hours are bunched. The time card calculator splits the week into regular and overtime hours; the overtime calculator prices them.

For payroll the month is usually broken into pay periods anyway: 86.67 hours per semi-monthly period (2,080 ÷ 24) or 80 hours per biweekly period, with the calendar month only mattering for salaried accruals. If you are converting a biweekly figure to a monthly one, multiply by 26 and divide by 12, not by 2; there are 2.17 biweekly periods in a month, not two.

The mistakes behind most wrong monthly totals

  • Calling a month 160 hours. 160 is four weeks, and only February in a non-leap year is four weeks long. 2026 has 2 months with exactly 160 work hours; the rest run up to 176.
  • Dividing a monthly salary by 160 to get an hourly rate. Use 173.33 (or 2,087 ÷ 12 for federal pay). Dividing by 160 overstates the rate by 8 percent, which matters the moment someone computes overtime from it.
  • Counting the holiday twice. Either remove the holiday from the workdays or credit 8 paid hours for it, not both. The calculator removes it; payroll usually credits it.
  • Using the weekday count as the workday count. October 2026 has 22 weekdays but 21 workdays for anyone who gets Columbus Day off. The difference is a full day of pay for an hourly employee.
  • Averaging overtime over the month. Not allowed under the FLSA for non-exempt employees, whatever the monthly total says. The workweek is the unit.

Frequently asked questions

How many work hours are in a month?

Between 152 and 176 in 2026 for a 40-hour, Monday-to-Friday schedule with US federal holidays off, depending on how many weekdays and holidays the month has. The flat average is 173.33 hours (2,080 hours a year divided by 12), or 173.92 on the federal 2,087-hour basis. For a specific month use the calendar: workdays × 8. October 2026 has 21 workdays and 168 hours.

How many hours are in a month?

On the clock, 672 hours in a 28-day February, 696 in a leap-year February, 720 in a 30-day month and 744 in a 31-day month. The average month has 730.5 hours (8,766 hours in an average year divided by 12). Work hours are a different question: a full-time month is 160 to 184 scheduled hours, 173.33 on average.

Where does 173.33 hours a month come from?

40 hours a week times 52 weeks is 2,080 hours a year; divided by 12 months that is 173.33. It is an average that spreads the uneven months evenly, which is what you want for converting an annual salary to an hourly rate. For 37.5 hours a week the figure is 162.5, for 35 hours 151.67. No single month actually contains 173.33 work hours.

What is the difference between 2,080 and 2,087 hours?

2,080 is 52 weeks times 40 hours and ignores the extra day or two every year has beyond 52 weeks. 2,087 is the average over the four-year leap cycle (365.25 days, 52.179 weeks) and is the divisor federal law prescribes for converting federal annual pay to hourly rates (5 U.S.C. 5504). Per month that is 173.33 versus 173.92 hours; on a $60,000 salary the hourly rate is $28.85 versus $28.75.

Is 160 hours a month full time?

Usually, but 160 is not the definition of anything. The Affordable Care Act counts 130 hours a month (30 a week) as full time for the employer mandate; the Bureau of Labor Statistics uses 35 hours a week; the FLSA has no definition. A 40-hour schedule produces 160 hours only in a month with exactly 20 workdays. Most months have 21 to 23.

How many working hours are there in 2026?

2,000 hours on a 40-hour week with the 11 federal holidays that fall on weekdays taken off: 261 weekdays minus 11 holidays leaves 250 workdays. Working the holidays gives 2,088. Paid time off is not included; 15 days of PTO leave 1,880 hours. For England and Wales on a 37.5-hour week the figure is 1,897.5 hours over 253 workdays.

Do paid holidays count as hours worked for overtime?

No. Under 29 CFR 778.218, pay for holidays, vacation and sick days is not pay for hours worked, so those hours do not count toward the 40-hour overtime threshold unless the employer agrees otherwise in a policy or contract. A week with a paid holiday and four 10-hour days has 48 paid hours and no overtime under federal law.

How do I convert biweekly hours to monthly?

Multiply the biweekly figure by 26 and divide by 12, because a year has 26 biweekly pay periods and 12 months. 80 hours biweekly is 173.33 hours a month, not 160. Semi-monthly periods are 86.67 hours each (2,080 ÷ 24). Weekly to monthly is weekly × 52 ÷ 12, so 40 hours a week is 173.33 a month.
