What time is 0400?

0400 is 4:00 AM, four o’clock in the night. On a 24-hour clock with a colon it is 04:00; in military style the colon goes and the four digits stand alone. The hour is 4 hours after midnight and 20 hours before the next one.

Four in the morning, early enough that the hour has a joke attached to it in every barracks. It is twelve hours before 1600, the other hour people mix it up with.

To read it, look at the first two digits: the hour is below 12, so drop the leading zero and add AM: 4 o’clock in the morning. The last two digits are minutes and never change, so 0425 is 4:25 AM and 0450 is 4:50 AM.

How to convert 0400 to standard time, and 4 AM back to 0400

Military to 12-hour. Split the four digits into hours and minutes, the hour is below 12, so drop the leading zero and add AM: 4 o’clock in the morning. So 0415 becomes 4:15 AM and 0445 becomes 4:45 AM.

12-hour to military. 4 AM keeps its number and gains a leading zero so that it has four digits: 4:05 AM is 0405. Drop the colon and the AM or PM, and you have the four digits.

The mistakes worth knowing: “04:00 AM” is a mix of both systems and means nothing, because a 24-hour time already says which half of the day it is. And 0400 is not 4 PM; 4 PM is 1600.

How to say 0400

0400 is said “zero four hundred”. The “hundred” stands in for the two zeros; nobody says “thirteen zero zero”. The leading zero is spoken: “zero four hundred”. “Oh four hundred” is common in conversation and in films, but “zero” is what radio procedure and most instructors use, because “oh” can be misheard.

Minutes follow the same logic. 0405 is “zero four zero five” and 0440 is “zero four forty”. Single-digit minutes get a spoken zero, so the listener knows a digit is there.

About the word “hours”: in speech, “zero four hundred hours” is everywhere, and nobody will correct you. In writing, Army Regulation 25-50 says the word is not used with military time, so a memorandum reads “at 0400”, not “at 0400 hours”.

0400 in Zulu time and US time zones

On its own, 0400 is local time wherever it is written. When the four digits carry a letter, the letter is the time zone. Z stands for Zulu, which is UTC, and J (Juliet) means the local time of the person speaking. The table converts 0400Z to the four US zones, in standard time and in daylight saving time.

0400Z (4:00 AM UTC) in US time zones
ZoneStandard timeDaylight saving time
Eastern (R (Romeo))11:00 PM EST (previous day)12:00 AM EDT
Central (S (Sierra))10:00 PM CST (previous day)11:00 PM CDT (previous day)
Mountain (T (Tango))9:00 PM MST (previous day)10:00 PM MDT (previous day)
Pacific (U (Uniform))8:00 PM PST (previous day)9:00 PM PDT (previous day)

Eastern Time is four hours behind UTC from March to November and five hours behind the rest of the year, which is why one Zulu time maps to two possible local times. The other three zones follow the same pattern an hour further west each.

Frequently asked questions

Is 0400 4 AM or 4 PM?

0400 is 4:00 AM. Any military time below 1200 is a morning time, so the 12-hour version takes AM. The minutes are identical in both systems, so 0420 is 4:20 AM.

What is 0430 in military time?

0430 is 4:30 AM, spoken “zero four thirty”. Half past is the most common minute value after the full hour; the 0430 page lists times around it in five-minute steps and shows what one, two or eight hours later looks like.

How do you say 0400?

“zero four hundred”. The leading zero is pronounced; “oh four hundred” is common in everyday speech but “zero” is the form used over the radio. With minutes, the word hundred drops out: 0415 is “zero four fifteen”. Adding “hours” is usual in speech and avoided in Army correspondence.

What is 4 AM in military time?

4 AM is 0400. Morning hours keep their number and gain a leading zero, so 4:30 AM is 0430. Remove the colon and the AM or PM and the result has four digits.

What is 0400Z in Eastern Time?

0400Z is 0400 UTC, which is 11:00 PM EST (previous day) in winter and 12:00 AM EDT during daylight saving time. The Z suffix marks Zulu time, the military name for UTC; without a letter, 0400 is local time.

Why does 0400 start with a zero?

Because military time always has four digits: two for the hour and two for the minutes. Hours below ten are padded with a zero so that every time has the same shape and 0400 cannot be misread as 400 minutes or as a three-digit number over a bad radio link. The zero is also spoken: “zero four hundred”.
