What time is 1900?

1900 is 7:00 PM, seven o’clock in the evening. On a 24-hour clock with a colon it is 19:00; in military style the colon goes and the four digits stand alone. The hour is 19 hours after midnight and 5 hours before the next one.

Seven in the evening, when evening events start. “Nineteen hundred” trips people up because it sounds like a year.

To read it, look at the first two digits: the hour is above 12, so subtract 12 and add PM: 19 − 12 = 7. The last two digits are minutes and never change, so 1925 is 7:25 PM and 1950 is 7:50 PM.

How to convert 1900 to standard time, and 7 PM back to 1900

Military to 12-hour. Split the four digits into hours and minutes, the hour is above 12, so subtract 12 and add PM: 19 − 12 = 7. So 1915 becomes 7:15 PM and 1945 becomes 7:45 PM.

12-hour to military. 7 PM is a PM hour, so add 12: 7 + 12 = 19. 7:05 PM is 1905. Drop the colon and the AM or PM, and you have the four digits.

The mistakes worth knowing: “19:00 PM” is a mix of both systems and means nothing, because a 24-hour time already says which half of the day it is. And 1900 is not 19:00 AM; there is no 19 o’clock in the morning.

How to say 1900

1900 is said “nineteen hundred”. The “hundred” stands in for the two zeros; nobody says “thirteen zero zero”. Numbers from ten upward are said as ordinary numbers: “nineteen hundred”, not “one nine hundred”.

Minutes follow the same logic. 1905 is “nineteen zero five” and 1940 is “nineteen forty”. Single-digit minutes get a spoken zero, so the listener knows a digit is there.

About the word “hours”: in speech, “nineteen hundred hours” is everywhere, and nobody will correct you. In writing, Army Regulation 25-50 says the word is not used with military time, so a memorandum reads “at 1900”, not “at 1900 hours”.

1900 in Zulu time and US time zones

On its own, 1900 is local time wherever it is written. When the four digits carry a letter, the letter is the time zone. Z stands for Zulu, which is UTC, and J (Juliet) means the local time of the person speaking. The table converts 1900Z to the four US zones, in standard time and in daylight saving time.

1900Z (7:00 PM UTC) in US time zones
ZoneStandard timeDaylight saving time
Eastern (R (Romeo))2:00 PM EST3:00 PM EDT
Central (S (Sierra))1:00 PM CST2:00 PM CDT
Mountain (T (Tango))12:00 PM MST1:00 PM MDT
Pacific (U (Uniform))11:00 AM PST12:00 PM PDT

Eastern Time is four hours behind UTC from March to November and five hours behind the rest of the year, which is why one Zulu time maps to two possible local times. The other three zones follow the same pattern an hour further west each.

Frequently asked questions

Is 1900 7 AM or 7 PM?

1900 is 7:00 PM. Any military time from 1300 to 2359 is after noon: subtract 12 to get the hour and add PM. The minutes are identical in both systems, so 1920 is 7:20 PM.

What is 1930 in military time?

1930 is 7:30 PM, spoken “nineteen thirty”. Half past is the most common minute value after the full hour; the 1930 page lists times around it in five-minute steps and shows what one, two or eight hours later looks like.

How do you say 1900?

“nineteen hundred”. The number is said normally, followed by “hundred” for the two zeros. With minutes, the word hundred drops out: 1915 is “nineteen fifteen”. Adding “hours” is usual in speech and avoided in Army correspondence.

What is 7 PM in military time?

7 PM is 1900. Afternoon and evening hours add 12, so 7:30 PM is 1930. Remove the colon and the AM or PM and the result has four digits.

What is 1900Z in Eastern Time?

1900Z is 1900 UTC, which is 2:00 PM EST in winter and 3:00 PM EDT during daylight saving time. The Z suffix marks Zulu time, the military name for UTC; without a letter, 1900 is local time.

Why is 7 PM written as 1900?

Because a 24-hour clock counts straight through the day instead of starting over at noon. 7 PM is 19 hours after midnight, so the hour is 19. Writing it with four digits and no colon is the military convention; 19:00 with a colon is the same time in civilian 24-hour notation.
