What time is 0600?

0600 is 6:00 AM, six o’clock in the early morning. On a 24-hour clock with a colon it is 06:00; in military style the colon goes and the four digits stand alone. The hour is 6 hours after midnight and 18 hours before the next one.

Six in the morning, the first hour that lines up with ordinary shift language: 0600 to 1400 is an early shift, 0600 to 1800 is a twelve.

To read it, look at the first two digits: the hour is below 12, so drop the leading zero and add AM: 6 o’clock in the morning. The last two digits are minutes and never change, so 0625 is 6:25 AM and 0650 is 6:50 AM.

How to convert 0600 to standard time, and 6 AM back to 0600

Military to 12-hour. Split the four digits into hours and minutes, the hour is below 12, so drop the leading zero and add AM: 6 o’clock in the morning. So 0615 becomes 6:15 AM and 0645 becomes 6:45 AM.

12-hour to military. 6 AM keeps its number and gains a leading zero so that it has four digits: 6:05 AM is 0605. Drop the colon and the AM or PM, and you have the four digits.

The mistakes worth knowing: “06:00 AM” is a mix of both systems and means nothing, because a 24-hour time already says which half of the day it is. And 0600 is not 6 PM; 6 PM is 1800.

How to say 0600

0600 is said “zero six hundred”. The “hundred” stands in for the two zeros; nobody says “thirteen zero zero”. The leading zero is spoken: “zero six hundred”. “Oh six hundred” is common in conversation and in films, but “zero” is what radio procedure and most instructors use, because “oh” can be misheard.

Minutes follow the same logic. 0605 is “zero six zero five” and 0640 is “zero six forty”. Single-digit minutes get a spoken zero, so the listener knows a digit is there.

About the word “hours”: in speech, “zero six hundred hours” is everywhere, and nobody will correct you. In writing, Army Regulation 25-50 says the word is not used with military time, so a memorandum reads “at 0600”, not “at 0600 hours”.

0600 in Zulu time and US time zones

On its own, 0600 is local time wherever it is written. When the four digits carry a letter, the letter is the time zone. Z stands for Zulu, which is UTC, and J (Juliet) means the local time of the person speaking. The table converts 0600Z to the four US zones, in standard time and in daylight saving time.

0600Z (6:00 AM UTC) in US time zones
ZoneStandard timeDaylight saving time
Eastern (R (Romeo))1:00 AM EST2:00 AM EDT
Central (S (Sierra))12:00 AM CST1:00 AM CDT
Mountain (T (Tango))11:00 PM MST (previous day)12:00 AM MDT
Pacific (U (Uniform))10:00 PM PST (previous day)11:00 PM PDT (previous day)

Eastern Time is four hours behind UTC from March to November and five hours behind the rest of the year, which is why one Zulu time maps to two possible local times. The other three zones follow the same pattern an hour further west each.

Frequently asked questions

Is 0600 6 AM or 6 PM?

0600 is 6:00 AM. Any military time below 1200 is a morning time, so the 12-hour version takes AM. The minutes are identical in both systems, so 0620 is 6:20 AM.

What is 0630 in military time?

0630 is 6:30 AM, spoken “zero six thirty”. Half past is the most common minute value after the full hour; the 0630 page lists times around it in five-minute steps and shows what one, two or eight hours later looks like.

How do you say 0600?

“zero six hundred”. The leading zero is pronounced; “oh six hundred” is common in everyday speech but “zero” is the form used over the radio. With minutes, the word hundred drops out: 0615 is “zero six fifteen”. Adding “hours” is usual in speech and avoided in Army correspondence.

What is 6 AM in military time?

6 AM is 0600. Morning hours keep their number and gain a leading zero, so 6:30 AM is 0630. Remove the colon and the AM or PM and the result has four digits.

What is 0600Z in Eastern Time?

0600Z is 0600 UTC, which is 1:00 AM EST in winter and 2:00 AM EDT during daylight saving time. The Z suffix marks Zulu time, the military name for UTC; without a letter, 0600 is local time.

Why does 0600 start with a zero?

Because military time always has four digits: two for the hour and two for the minutes. Hours below ten are padded with a zero so that every time has the same shape and 0600 cannot be misread as 600 minutes or as a three-digit number over a bad radio link. The zero is also spoken: “zero six hundred”.
