What time is 1400?
1400 is 2:00 PM, two o’clock in the afternoon. On a 24-hour clock with a colon it is 14:00; in military style the colon goes and the four digits stand alone. The hour is 14 hours after midnight and 10 hours before the next one.
Two in the afternoon. 1400 is a common meeting hour and the most common mix-up with 0400, twelve hours earlier.
To read it, look at the first two digits: the hour is above 12, so subtract 12 and add PM: 14 − 12 = 2. The last two digits are minutes and never change, so 1425 is 2:25 PM and 1450 is 2:50 PM.

How to convert 1400 to standard time, and 2 PM back to 1400
Military to 12-hour. Split the four digits into hours and minutes, the hour is above 12, so subtract 12 and add PM: 14 − 12 = 2. So 1415 becomes 2:15 PM and 1445 becomes 2:45 PM.
12-hour to military. 2 PM is a PM hour, so add 12: 2 + 12 = 14. 2:05 PM is 1405. Drop the colon and the AM or PM, and you have the four digits.
The mistakes worth knowing: “14:00 PM” is a mix of both systems and means nothing, because a 24-hour time already says which half of the day it is. And 1400 is not 14:00 AM; there is no 14 o’clock in the morning.
How to say 1400
1400 is said “fourteen hundred”. The “hundred” stands in for the two zeros; nobody says “thirteen zero zero”. Numbers from ten upward are said as ordinary numbers: “fourteen hundred”, not “one four hundred”.
Minutes follow the same logic. 1405 is “fourteen zero five” and 1440 is “fourteen forty”. Single-digit minutes get a spoken zero, so the listener knows a digit is there.
About the word “hours”: in speech, “fourteen hundred hours” is everywhere, and nobody will correct you. In writing, Army Regulation 25-50 says the word is not used with military time, so a memorandum reads “at 1400”, not “at 1400 hours”.
1400 in Zulu time and US time zones
On its own, 1400 is local time wherever it is written. When the four digits carry a letter, the letter is the time zone. Z stands for Zulu, which is UTC, and J (Juliet) means the local time of the person speaking. The table converts 1400Z to the four US zones, in standard time and in daylight saving time.
| Zone | Standard time | Daylight saving time |
|---|---|---|
| Eastern (R (Romeo)) | 9:00 AM EST | 10:00 AM EDT |
| Central (S (Sierra)) | 8:00 AM CST | 9:00 AM CDT |
| Mountain (T (Tango)) | 7:00 AM MST | 8:00 AM MDT |
| Pacific (U (Uniform)) | 6:00 AM PST | 7:00 AM PDT |
Eastern Time is four hours behind UTC from March to November and five hours behind the rest of the year, which is why one Zulu time maps to two possible local times. The other three zones follow the same pattern an hour further west each.

Frequently asked questions
Is 1400 2 AM or 2 PM?
1400 is 2:00 PM. Any military time from 1300 to 2359 is after noon: subtract 12 to get the hour and add PM. The minutes are identical in both systems, so 1420 is 2:20 PM.
What is 1430 in military time?
1430 is 2:30 PM, spoken “fourteen thirty”. Half past is the most common minute value after the full hour; the 1430 page lists times around it in five-minute steps and shows what one, two or eight hours later looks like.
How do you say 1400?
“fourteen hundred”. The number is said normally, followed by “hundred” for the two zeros. With minutes, the word hundred drops out: 1415 is “fourteen fifteen”. Adding “hours” is usual in speech and avoided in Army correspondence.
What is 2 PM in military time?
2 PM is 1400. Afternoon and evening hours add 12, so 2:30 PM is 1430. Remove the colon and the AM or PM and the result has four digits.
What is 1400Z in Eastern Time?
1400Z is 1400 UTC, which is 9:00 AM EST in winter and 10:00 AM EDT during daylight saving time. The Z suffix marks Zulu time, the military name for UTC; without a letter, 1400 is local time.
Why is 2 PM written as 1400?
Because a 24-hour clock counts straight through the day instead of starting over at noon. 2 PM is 14 hours after midnight, so the hour is 14. Writing it with four digits and no colon is the military convention; 14:00 with a colon is the same time in civilian 24-hour notation.
